The real math

Turf isn't just a lawn — it's a financial decision

Most homeowners think about turf as a cost. The ones who've done it for a few years think about it as one of the best financial decisions they made for their home. Here's why.

Premium turf yard at evening — Shadetree Landscape Design
"A typical East Valley homeowner spends $2,400 to $4,800 a year on lawn watering alone. Turf eliminates that cost on day one."
Chris Flores — Owner, Shadetree Landscape Design
65%
Less water used outdoors
Outdoor irrigation accounts for up to 70% of home water use in Arizona. Switching to turf eliminates almost all of it — immediately and permanently.
$0
Monthly lawn maintenance cost
No mowing, no edging, no fertilizing, no re-seeding. The $150–$300/month most East Valley homeowners pay a lawn service stops the day the turf goes in.
3–6
Years to pay for itself
Between water savings and eliminated maintenance costs, most turf installations pay for themselves in 3 to 6 years — then keep saving you money for the next 15 to 20 years after that.
15%
Average home value increase
A well-installed turf yard with professional landscaping consistently adds 10–15% to a home's perceived value — and in the East Valley market, buyers expect low-maintenance outdoor spaces.
City rebate programs

Cities across the East Valley will
pay you to remove your grass

Multiple cities in the Phoenix metro are actively paying homeowners to remove their grass and replace it with turf or xeriscape landscaping. These programs are real, funded, and available right now — but they require pre-approval before work starts, so you need to know about them before you call a contractor.

We walk every turf client through the rebate process as part of the project planning. In many cases, we help handle the pre-approval paperwork so you don't have to figure it out on your own.

Don't start before you apply
Every rebate program requires you to apply and get written approval before any work begins. Starting without pre-approval disqualifies you from the rebate — even if you would have qualified. We make sure this step happens first.
Ask Us About Your City
City Rebate amount Max payout Status Key requirement
Phoenix $2.00 per sqft $3,000 Active 2026 Grass removal, xeriscape replacement
Chandler $1.50 per sqft $2,000 Active 2026 Desert plants required — turf alone doesn't qualify
Mesa Varies $2,100 Active 2026 50% plant coverage required
Tempe $0.50 per sqft $2,000 Active 2026 30% plant coverage required • Pre-approval required
Scottsdale Was up to $5,000 Currently Closed Program expected to reopen — ask us about current status
Rebate amounts and program status are current as of mid-2026. Programs can change — we verify current availability for your city during your free consultation. Tempe also offers a TreeBate of up to $75 per qualifying desert tree planted as part of a grass conversion project.
HOA and artificial turf — what you need to know
Arizona HB 2131 prevents HOAs from banning artificial turf if natural grass is otherwise permitted on the property. So even if your HOA has historically restricted turf, they may no longer be able to enforce that ban. We recommend confirming with your HOA before starting, but this law gives most East Valley homeowners more flexibility than they realize. We can walk you through this during your free consultation.
How we install

Why installation quality matters
as much as the turf itself

Two yards can have the same turf product and look completely different in five years — because the base work underneath determines everything. Here's what a proper installation looks like.

01
Remove existing grass & debris
All existing grass, roots, and organic material are removed completely. This step matters more than most people realize — organic material left behind will decompose under the turf, creating bumps and soft spots over time.
Full removal — no shortcuts
02
Grade & compact the base
The ground is graded for drainage and compacted with a vibrating plate compactor. Arizona's monsoon season means drainage has to work — water sitting under turf will cause it to bubble and shift. We slope toward natural drainage paths before anything goes down.
Graded for monsoon drainage
03
Lay crushed aggregate base
A layer of crushed decomposed granite or road base is spread and compacted to create a firm, stable surface. This is the layer that keeps the turf from sinking or becoming uneven, and it also improves drainage through the system.
Compacted DG or road base
04
Install, seam & secure
The turf is rolled out, cut to fit precisely, and seamed where panels meet. Seams are glued and nailed along a perimeter board — when done correctly, they're completely invisible. Nails are placed every 4–6 inches around the perimeter and every 12 inches through the field.
Invisible seams • Perimeter nailed • Infill applied

A note on Arizona heat and turf selection
Not all synthetic turf handles Arizona summers equally. We only install products rated for high-UV environments with heat-reducing technology — including lighter fiber colors that reflect more sunlight and infill options that stay cooler underfoot than standard black rubber crumb. During your consultation, Chris will walk you through the specific products we recommend for your yard's sun exposure and how you plan to use the space.
