Structural integrity
meets desert elegance

Precision-engineered stone work built to endure Arizona's extreme elements. We specialize in premium travertine, structural pavers, and bespoke outdoor architecture that adds lasting value to your home.

The Shadetree Standard

What separates a hardscape that lasts
from one that fails in three years

In Arizona, the desert doesn't forgive shortcuts. Poor drainage, hard clay soil, and summer heat cycles put more stress on a patio or driveway than most contractors plan for. Here's what we build into every project — and why it matters.

"Most paver failures in the Phoenix area come from one cause: a weak or undersized base. We fix that before the first stone goes down."
Chris Flores — Owner, Shadetree Landscape Design
1
A solid foundation — not just sand
We never skip straight to sand. Every project starts with a properly compacted gravel base — the structural layer that keeps your patio or driveway from shifting and cracking over time. Most failures start here, because most contractors cut this step short.
4 inches for patios & walkways • 6 inches for driveways • Deeper where the ground needs it
2
Drainage planned in, not added after
East Valley soil often has a dense layer called caliche — a hard, calcium-rich clay that blocks water from draining naturally. When monsoon rains hit, that trapped water pushes up against your foundation from below. We find and address these layers during excavation, before anything is built on top.
Caliche identified at excavation • Proper grade and drainage designed in from day one
3
Locked in place — permanently
Once pavers are set, edge restraints are locked along the perimeter to prevent the edges from spreading outward over time. The joints between pavers are filled with polymeric sand — a special mix that hardens when wet, locking everything in place and blocking weeds from growing through the cracks.

Material selection

Premium materials built for
Arizona's extreme climate

Not every material performs equally at 118°F. We work exclusively with materials that have proven track records in the desert — materials that hold their color, resist heat absorption, and maintain their structural integrity through decades of freeze-thaw and UV exposure.

Structural Pavers
Concrete pavers offer design flexibility and structural performance. Available in hundreds of colors, textures, and patterns, they're the go-to material for driveways, walkways, and large-format patio designs where custom patterning is part of the vision.

How we build

The precision behind every project

Every Shadetree hardscape follows the same disciplined build sequence — because cutting corners at any stage compromises the entire project.

01
Excavation & sub-base engineering
We excavate to the required depth, assess the soil below, and identify any caliche layers or drainage issues before a single stone is laid. The compacted aggregate base is installed to spec — deeper where the soil or drainage demands it. This is the step most contractors rush, and it's the step that determines whether a hardscape lasts five years or fifty.
4" base for patios • 6" base for driveways • Caliche addressed at excavation
02
Bedding, edge restraint & layout
A bedding sand layer is leveled to an even depth over the aggregate base. Edge restraints are secured at the perimeter before any pavers are placed — locking the entire field in position permanently. The pattern is then laid out dry for review before any material is set.
Consistent bedding sand depth • Mechanical edge restraints installed before paving begins
03
Precision finishing & polymeric sealing
Pavers are set, cut, and fitted with precision. Polymeric joint sand is applied and compacted into the joints, then activated with water — locking pavers in place, resisting weeds, and preventing washout through monsoon season and beyond. The finished surface is inspected by Chris Flores before the project is considered complete.
Polymeric joint sand • Owner inspection on every project • 35+ years of proven results

Permitting & HOA

We handle the complexity so you don't have to

Most hardscaping projects don't require permits on their own — but retaining walls, drainage modifications, and any gas or electrical work added to the project typically do. We know the rules in every city we work in, and we coordinate the process as part of every build.

Tempe & Scottsdale permits
Standard paver patios and walkways typically don't require a building permit in Tempe or Scottsdale. However, retaining walls above certain heights, drainage alterations, and any associated gas or electrical work do require permits submitted through the city's official process. In Tempe, all permit applications are submitted through the Citizen Access Portal. In Scottsdale, gas and plumbing work for any exterior improvement requires a plumbing permit.
We advise on permit requirements during the design consultation and coordinate with the city on your behalf when permits are required.
HOA approval
City permit approval and HOA architectural approval are two separate processes. Many East Valley HOAs require homeowners to submit exterior improvement plans for review before work begins — particularly for changes visible from the street, like driveways, front yard hardscaping, and retaining walls. City approval does not replace HOA approval.
We recommend confirming your HOA's CC&R requirements before the project starts. We can help you understand what documentation your HOA may need to see.
